Within the past 12 months, the economy has gyrated from modest growth with inflation to
rapid decline with deflation. U.S. Printing shipments decreased by 4.5 percent in 2008 year
compared to 2007 according to the latest estimates from Printing Industries of America’s print
market tracking model. By comparison, printing shipments increased by 1.7 percent in 2007
and 3.2 percent in 2006. In this Flash we examine how this dramatic transition impacts printers

West Linn Paper Company successfully completed a three-day test
using renewable diesel in place of their existing fuel oil. All indicators show that this alternative fuel, made up of over
90% biomass, can be used in industrial boilers without significant modification and results in similar steam output
and operational efficiency as compared to traditional petroleum-based fuel. This was the first large scale industrial
use of this renewable fuel in the region.
